Alba Science is inviting you to take part in our Underarm Study/Antiperspirant Study.

This is a research study to measure the effects of different antiperspirants on underarm skin condition.

Skin condition will be measured by visual assessments, instrumental assessments and questionnaires. Photographs may also be taken of your underarms.

If you are interested in taking part in this study, however you are not able to make all visits please still apply, letting me know the dates that you cannot attend.

The study will take place at our test center site in Edinburgh with screening starting on:

Monday 29 July 2019 (Group 1) OR  Tuesday 30 July 2019 (Group 2).

The study will last approximately 2 and a half weeks in total (including screening) with 8 visits to the study site ending on Wednesday 14 August 2019 (Group 1) or Thursday 15 August 2019 (Group 2).

The screening visit will be used to assess your suitability to participate in the study.

The test phase of the study will start on:

Wednesday 31 July 2019 (Group 1) or Thursday 01 August 2019 (Group 2) and will last for 2 weeks.

There will be some restrictions to adhere to while you are on the study, for example:

  • No use of any products on your underarms other than what we provide.
  • No swimming or using saunas or hot tubs during the study.
  • No underarm tanning, use of sun showers, sun beds and no self-tanning products to be used on your underarms for the whole study.
  • You must shave, wash your underarms and apply antiperspirant on specific days/times throughout the study.
  • No smoking or consuming spicy food, hot drinks, green tea, cranberry juice or any food or drink containing caffeine for at least an hour before every visit.
  • You must refrain from vigorous exercise within 48 hours of all visits.
  • No alcohol for at least 12 hours before instrumental measurement visits.

Study Dates:

Screening: Monday 29 July 2019 (Group 1) or Tuesday 30 July 2019 (Group 2). This visit will take approx. 45 minutes.

If you are suitable to participate you will be required to attend the test center on the following dates:

  • You must be available to attend the study site between 9:30am- 1:00pm for all study visits.

For your screening appointment and all further site visits, please wear something that will allow the assessor to view your underarms easily.

Garments should be loose fitting and should not rub against your underarms.     

To participate in this study you must:

  • Be female
  • Caucasian (or with skin pale enough to allow redness assessment)
  • 18-65 and in good general health.
  • Have underarm skin that is free from tattoos, cuts, scratches, abrasions or open wounds.
  • Have underarm skin that is free from skin tags and raised or prominent moles.
  • Be able to stand for a few minutes with both arms raised above your head for visual assessments.
  • Be able to lie on your back on a bed with both your arms above your head to expose your underarms for approximately 30 minutes for instrumental assessments.
  • Be a regular antiperspirant user (at least once per day).
  • Shave your underarms on a regular basis (at least twice per week).
  • Be available to attend the study site between 9:30am- 1:00pm for all study visits.

You will not be able to participate if you:

  • Are pregnant, breast feeding or at risk of pregnancy.
  • Are diabetic.
  • Have any known allergies or sensitivities to soaps, fragrances, deodorants or any other topically applied products.
  • Have any active skin conditions such as dermatitis or eczema.
  • Have underarm shape which will render any of the protocol procedures difficult.
  • Have participated in a study with your underarms as the target area within three weeks of the start of the study.
  • Have used chemical underarm hair removal creams or lotions within 4 weeks of the study.
  • Are using topical drugs on the underarms or have any medical problems affecting your underarms.
  • Are an employee of Unilever or Alba Science Ltd.

Expenses for this study are £110.
