4 Week Spot Study – Face Mask

Study Summary

Alba Science is inviting you to take part in a research study to assess the effects and safety of a face mask when used twice weekly, over a 4-week period. 

Approximately 55 healthy, Caucasian female volunteers, who are regular users of rinse-off facial products will be recruited.  Volunteers must have spots and oily skin type, presenting with a moderately dull complexion, with visible pores (open pores, clogged pores, pimples, blackheads) and spots on their face. 

Photographs

During the study, we may take photographs of your face.  These images will be labelled only with study number, subject number and date/day of study. You will not be identifiable from these images.  They may be used for the following purposes:

  • Tests conducted by the Sponsor using Sponsor employees
  • To aid in future training of skin assessors either at Alba Science or by the Sponsor
  • Tests conducted by Sponsor using members of the public
  • Reproduction in internal Sponsor reports and presentations
  • Reproduction in external reports, journals and presentations

Your visit to the test centre will take approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes,  please do not wear any facial cosmetics to this appointment.

Attendance

You will be required to attend 2 visits to our Broughton Street test centre.

Each visit will take Approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Inclusion Criteria

Subjects must be:

Caucasian female (Fair Skin) (Fitzpatrick Scale I – III).

Aged 18 - 40 years.

50% of whom will have self-assessed sensitive skin.

Oily skin classification based on their own perception.

Visible imperfections on the face (open pores, clogged pores, pimples, blackheads).

At least 5 spots, 10 black heads.

Presenting a moderately dull complexion.

Subjects will be regular users of rinse-off products.

Subjects are willing to utilise the test material in place of their usual face mask.

Subjects are taking an effective oral contraceptive or other method of contraception.

Able to communicate well with the investigator and to comply with the requirements of the entire study.

Provision of written informed consent to participate as shown by a witnessed signature on the Subject Consent Form.

Exclusion Criteria

You will not be eligible to take part in this study if any of the following applies:

Those who are pregnant or breast feeding.

Those taking medications which in the opinion of test personnel may affect test results.

Those suffering from any medical condition which, in the opinion of the test personnel, will automatically exclude them from participating in the study.

Those with an active skin disease or skin disorder (psoriasis, eczema, scars, wounds, active herpes or systemic infection) that could influence with study evaluation or could require local or systemic therapy.

Those who have had an allergic reaction to a cosmetic product.

Those who have applied products on their face (other than their usual cleanser) on the day of inclusion.

Study Restrictions

Volunteers will be requested to observe the following restrictions during the course of their participation in the study:

Not to change their regular brands of other facial skincare products including cleansers and make up during the study.

Not to use aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-histamines or corticosteroids for the duration of the study (paracetamol is permissible for pain relief). Subjects are requested to alert test personnel of any changes to medication during this study and are informed that certain medications are an exclusion criterion and may result in their withdrawal from the study.

To refrain from having surgical or non-surgical aesthetic procedures during the study including Botox, fillers, lip enhancements, permanent or semi-permanent eyebrow or cosmetic treatments.

To refrain from exposing the facial skin to excessive natural sunlight or to other sources of UV light such as tanning beds.

To attend the test centre having refrained from applying any products to your face prior to Visit 2 (Week 4).

Expenses

You will be paid a £60 cheque in your name on completion of this study.
